SHAGBARK
FARM IN OHIO
Our
farm was named after the the shagbark hickory trees that
grow there. It is the perfect environment for
pretty much whatever we want to do.
It is the perfect environment for our red
raspberry production. Gentle slopes provide
the air circulation needed to grow large sweet raspberries.
The field area we chose is surrounded by Tulip Poplars,
one of the first trees to bloom in spring. The tulip poplars
bring the first bees of the season, an important ingredient
to raspberry growing!
We
also harvest shagbark
hickory nuts and also produce shagbark
hickory syrup almost forgotten by modern folk!
I
have 10 acres to experiment with medicinal
and wellness herbs Native Americans have known
about forever. Herb production is only getting larger in
scale. I have introduced, successfully, many well known
herbs which we used in our teas and body products. Of course
the culinary herbs
are also thriving in this environment as well as our annual
production of stevia.
Our
10 acres are heavily wooded providing the perfect environment
for woodland mushrooms.
There are so many varieties of mushrooms that grow in our
forest, we haven't been able to identify all of them yet.
We offer as available, morels, chanterelles and waxcaps.
We have also discovered that the land is home to many sassafrass
trees and we now produce traditionally handmade
file powder, another culinary ingredient known
to Native Americans and almost forgotten by modern man!
And if the critters done't get them, we harvest Ohio
Pawpaws. The Pawpaw is recognized as Ohio's
native fruit, also known as Ohio banana, tastes like a banana!
Although
not certified organic, we follow natural, organic, sustainable
farming techniques that rely on natural methods. You can
find more information about our farm practices, land and
water usage here.
